South Luangwa National Park

The park covers an area of 9050 km and may be inaccessible during the rainy season between December and April.  The rainfall between October and March is 800 mm on average and the Luangwa river (247km long flowing into the Zambize along the rift valley) is liable to flood from  January to March.  A game reserve was declared in 1938 and the Nsefu and Chifungwe sectors were included when the new park was declared in February 1972.  The park has all the major vegetation types of the central African valleys and spectacular escarpments.  The large mammals most frequently seen are baboons, bushbuck, puku, buffalo, elephant, the Thornicraft race of giraffe, Hartebeest,  hippos, hyena, kudu, leopard, lion, vervet, monkey, oribi, impala, black rhino (rare), reedbuck, roan antelope, warthog, waterbuck, wild dog, wildebeest, and zebra.

The night game drive offers good opportunity to view nocturnal animal and in particular the leopard.

The local Lilian's lovebird is one of 400 known species of birds.
