Lake Malawi

Malawi is formerly known as Nyassaland and has an are of 117.050 km2 with a population of 11 million.  Malawi is a narrow country 935km long, located at the southern end of the rift valley.  The centerpiece is Lake Malawi, the third deepest in the world (after Baikal and Tanganyika).  The country has a greater range of climates and elevation than most, and 9% of its area is national parks and wildlife reserves, covering all major vegetation types.

 

Lake Malawi is also called Lake Nyasa.  It is 587km long and supports the most diverse fish population of any lake in the world, with 450 species, 90% are endemic, and of these 350 are in the Cichidae family.  The lake has an elevation of 437m.  The shoreline varies from sandy beaches to swamps and cliffs.  The outlet of the lake is the Shire River flowing into the Zambize.
