December 28 - Australia: Cairns

4:30am!:  Jon's run #36

I decided last night that the only way I would be able to run and work was going to be if I continued to run in the mornings.  And since we need to be at the diveshop at 6:30, this means getting up at 4:30.  I'd like to say that I might still have the energy at the end of the day to get a run in but we're just so tired when we get home that this doesn't seem to work.

What does one do when running before the sun has even come up?  Well, this morning we headed to the path along the ocean and ran sprints.  5 sets to be exact.  I thought that since the sun wasn't even up yet, why not run along the water?  Once the sun is up it's just too hot and the sun takes so much out of you that it's almost impossible to run there in the daylight.  Nothing exciting.  No ruminations on homeless cats and dogs on welfare, no smooshed froggies, just running this morning.  I did get to watch the sun rise over the ocean though, which was very nice.

Today was my day off.  I wanted to go diving, but both boats were booked up and there was no room for stand-bys.  So I dropped Jon off at the boat at 6:30 and came back to the townhouse to read, update journals, and relax.

Books Galore

After lunch, I went to the library and to Sue's Book Exchange.  After picking up a bunch of books (Jon had picked up a bunch yesterday as well), I realized that we had all these books but don't have any time to read them!  We can't read them during the day - there's never any time on the boat.  And we're too exhausted to do more than an hour or two of reading at night before we fall asleep.  So most of these books will be returned to the library without having been read, probably.

Dive Computers!

At 4:00, I went to Deep Sea Diver's Den to pick up and pay for our new Suunto Stinger Dive Computers.  .

The Suunto Stinger

Very exciting!  And very expensive.  But also very crucial for our Instructor training.  And like any other computer one might buy, it's a great toy and very useful, and also the worst investment one can make.  This will be obsolete in 6 months when better versions come out.  But I like these computers.  Jon picked them out for us after much thought and deliberation, and he decided to go for the watch-sized computers instead of the massive Beem-Me-Up-Scotty consoles that many other people wear on their arms.  I must say, I like his choice and I can't wait to break them in!

Pick Up Jon

I went to The Pier and looked around the mall while I waited for Jon to finish his boat chores.  Sea Quest usually gets in around 4:20-4:30, and the crew can finish up the cleaning chores within a half-hour.  So when 5:15 rolled around Jon still hadn't shown up, I knew what was going on.  I'm wise to the ways by now.  I walked down the docks and found the usual suspects sitting around drinking beer, so I sat and chatted for a while myself.  Jon and I got home a little after 6:00 and I threw together some Mussuman Chicken while he showered.

Not to ruin our stellar pattern, we were in bed by 10:00.
