May 12 - United States: Jackson, Wyoming

Jon called today "a vacation from the vacation".  We slept in and then called the moms to wish them "Happy Mother's Day".  We made turkey sandwiches for lunch, and then set out to explore Jackson.

Jackson Hole

Unfortunately, everything was closed on Sunday.  But we enjoyed walking around the cute little town, which looks like  something out of an old western movie.  And it was a gorgeous day, too.

The only place that was open was the grocery store and the real estate offices.  We stopped and looked at the pictures and descriptions of places up for sale, just to dream for a little while.  One of the real estate agents came outside to chat us up, and gave us one of their catalogues.  I wonder what he would say if we'd told him we were living out of our car and have about $2.57 in our bank account.

Thomas Mangelsen Gallery

We also wandered into the Thomas Mangelsen gallery.  He's a nature and wildlife photographer and takes some amazing pictures.  I've known of him for years, because my friend Kathryn used to work for him in Park City, Utah.  But Jon has never seen his work, and so we spent some time wandering around the gallery.  He's a lot like Peter Lik, our favorite photographer from Australia, except Thomas Mangelsen takes more photos of wildlife.  But while I love to admire his pictures, I would rather blow up and frame some of Jon's photos instead.

Jackson Hole Ski Resort

Then we went for a long drive out to Teton Village, about a half-hour away and at the base of the Jackson Hole Ski Slopes.  There, we checked out the ski slopes and the surrounding ski resort.  We were surprised, because we expected it to be much larger and more developed.  But it looked like a quaint little town at the base of the slopes.  And since it was closed for the season, there was no one around.  It would be nice to come back here during ski season someday.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing and watching TV.  For dinner, we heated up some more soup in the microwave and watched more TV.  A vacation from the vacation, for sure!
